Elemental Kitchen Consecration Ritual

Many Kitchen or Hearth Witches perform a consecration ritual on your kitchen, dedicating it to the purpose of co-creating with the Powers That Be in the form of culinary magick.

Wicccans may wish to perform a consecration that incorporates honoring the God and Goddess, while others may wish to call upon other deities or spirits, or invite the Elements to take an active role as they believe that each lends its characteristic energies to create a balanced magical atmosphere in their hearth space.

The kitchen consecration can be performed on its own or incorporated the initial house blessing when you first move in. Some may wish to compose a more elaborate ritual that specifically mentions various important aspect of their kitchen (oven, refrigerator, pantry, etc.) while others prefer to keep it simple.

Before you begin, make sure that you kitchen is as clean as possible. You may wish to smudge with sage, rosemary, and/or lavender before beginning the blessing.

The herbs listed below are only suggestions and you are free to substitute for the ones that you feel most comfortable with.

Depending on the layout of your kitchen, you may not be able to place each Element candle directly on the floor in the center of each wall. If this is the case, just place the candle as close to this spot as possible, even if it has to be on a countertop, a shelf, or even on top of the fridge. Just make sure that they are in safe areas and not too close to other items.

This Elemental Kitchen Consecration Ritual is moderately simple, but very effective.

Blessings.

  • Place the incense or essential oil and the white spell candle on your kitchen altar, table, or countertop.
  • Take a deep breath, exhale, and light the incense or oil.
  • Place each Element candle on the floor (or counter/table) at the center of the wall that most closely aligns with its directional association, in the following order: Earth in the north, Air in the east, Fire in the south, and Water in the west.
  • Light the Earth candle, place a bay leaf in front of it. Acknowledge the power of the Element as it relates to food preparation and eating. Say, “I welcome the energies of abundant sustenance into my kitchen.”
  • Light the Air candle, place a bay leaf in front of it. Acknowledge the power of the Element as it relates to food preparation and eating. Say, “I welcome the energies of the invisible life force into my kitchen.”
  • Light the Fire candle, place a bay leaf in front of it. Acknowledge the power of the Element as it relates to food preparation and eating. Say, “I welcome the energies of nourishing transformation into my kitchen.”
  • Light the Water candle, place a bay leaf in front of it. Acknowledge the power of the Element as it relates to food preparation and eating. Say, “I welcome the energies of life-sustaining flow into my kitchen.”
  • Place your chosen herbs in the bowl and stir them twice deosil (clockwise, sunwise) with your finger and then stir them 3 times with the cinnamon stick.
  • Dab each food token into the herb mixture and place it on one of the bay leaves.
  • Dab the star anise into the herb mixture, then place it in front of the white spell candle.
  • As you prepare to light the candle, take a deep breath, exhale, and say the following (or similar) words: “Working in union with the powers of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, and with the sacred Fifth Element of Spirit, I bless this kitchen. This room is now my sacred hearth space where magic is made with joyful intention, nourishing the body, mind and soul. Blessed Be.”
  • Light the spell candle and spend a few moments in quiet reflection.
  • When you feel that the consecration work is finished, take the food tokens, bay leaves, and herb mixture outdoors and sprinkle them over the Earth.
  • You may save the star anise and cinnamon stick to use in magical recipes or keep as lucky kitchen charms.
  • Gently extinguish the Element candles. They can be used again in other ritual work or just for ambience.
  • Allow the white spell candle to burn out safely on its own.
