Basic Consecration Ritual

Basic Consecration Ritual

Recipe by Mère SouveraineDifficulty: Moderate

This is a simple ritual that can be used to consecrate any magickal tools, ceremonial garb, jewelry, spell jars, your altar, etc.

By offering the tool to the powers of the four elements, it is consecrated and blessed from all directions. This ritual not only consecrates your tools, but it also sets your claim of ownership, so it is best that others do not use it. Keep in mind that just like with everything else in Pagan ritual, there is rarely a set-in-stone right or wrong way to do something. This ritual is simply, but effective. It is an example and a place for you to begin.

For best results, make sure to immediately put your newly consecrated item to use. This will bind the consecration and strengthen the energy.

What You Need

  • Salt in a small bowl

  • Incense in heat-proof holder

  • White candle in a holder

  • Water in a chalice or bowl

  • Altar or table

Instructions

  • If your tradition requires you to cast a circle, do so now.
  • Light the candle and the incense.
  • Take the tool or item you wish to consecrate in your hands, and face north. Sprinkle a pinch of salt over it, then present by holding it high and say:
    Powers of the North,
    Guardians of the Earth,
I consecrate this [wand of willow, athame of steel, amulet of crystal, or chalice of silver, etc]
and charge it with your energies.
I purify it this night and make this tool sacred.
  • Now, turn to the east and, holding the tool in the smoke of the incense, and say:
    Powers of the East,
    Guardians of the Air,
I consecrate this [wand of willow or ?]
and charge it with your energies.
I purify it this night and make this tool sacred.
  • Face the south and pass the tool over the flame of the candle and say:
    Powers of the South,
    Guardians of Fire,
I consecrate this [wand of willow or ?]
and charge it with your energies.
I purify it this night and make this tool sacred.
  • Finally, turn to the west, and pass your ritual tool over the cup of water. Say:
    Powers of the West,
    Guardians of Water,
I consecrate this [wand of willow or ?]
and charge it with your energies.
I purify it this night and make this tool sacred.
  • Face your altar, hold the [wand of willow or ?] up to the sky, and say:
I charge this [wand of willow or ?] in the name of Old Ones,
the Ancients, the Sun and the Moon and the Stars.
By the powers of the Earth, of Air, of Fire and of Water
I banish the energies of any previous handlers or owners,
I renew and awaken its powers.
I consecrate this [wand of willow or ?]
    and it is mine.

Notes

  • To avoid any accidental injuries while consecrating something sharp, such as an athame or sword, hold the pointed end away from you, aiming it up at an angle when presenting to the Quarters.
  • When passing items over the flame, make sure they are high enough that they do not get scorched or catch on fire.
